The Sportsman's was right at the bottom of Castle hill and the other pub nearby was the Wheatsheaf. Both mysteriously burnt down .......................................

When Brian,Bill Hurdley was the last landlord I remember.
 
The Trainer that season was J Ball,don't know his job I'll have a guess undertaker.
 
Bears Paw ! Bill Erdsley as Toddy confirmed, his son, also Bill, played for a number of local teams, Lostock. Vic's reserve's, Barnton. Pub at one end of New Street, other end was Penrhyn Arms, Dobies managed.
