Lockdowns

I think we are all fighting on the same side here. The key aim is to reduce infections and minimise deaths.

To do that we have to reduce social interactions. At one end of the spectrum is social distancing and at the other end is a total lock down. We know we don't don't want to go down that lock down route for both economic and personal impact factors.

So the bottom line is people MUST keep social distancing rules. It isn't possible to protect the vulnerable without locking up all over 60's etc, so its beholden on everyone to do what they can to behave, be sensible and be respectful for those who are vulnerable. That way we should be able to get on with some aspects of our lives and save some parts of the economy whilst accepting that (say) foreign travel is going to be a pipe dream until there is a vaccination available

James, please realise people want a new approach, and don’t want to watch “the bodies pile up”

On 8th October, the Guardian told us the North of England would be out of ICU beds in a weeks time. 3 weeks later, no such event occurred. So forgive people for not buying the fear mongering.

2/3s of infected people aren’t even showing symptoms (likely even high as majority of symptomless people obviously aren’t going to get a test as far as they know they’re fine)

You can’t control a virus when a majority of people don’t even know they have it.

That’s the point an increasing number of people are making. Protect the few people that this virus is dangerous to. The virus could be here for a few years. Destroy your economy and you destroy any chance you have of actually being able to protect the vulnerable.
And others - like Johnson, Oakeshott et al were all promising us the sunlit uplands again by the autumn and Christmas. So pardon me if I also choose not to believe those who do not learn from the mistakes that occurred earlier this year.

Here are some interesting statistics.

The 5 year average for deaths from pneumonia and Influenze is 2355 a month for Pneumonia and 1933 a month for Influenze. A combined total of 4288 every month, on average.
From January 1st to 31st August 2020 a total of 13,619 and 394 (!) deaths were recorded as due to pneumonia and influenza respectively.
A monthly average of 1751 deaths every month so far this year.
A reduction on the previous 5 year average of 2537 less deaths each month, or a total of 20,296 this year.
So, the lives we have lost due to covid have been saved from dying of pneumonia and influenza?

Looking like we’re going into another national lockdown next week... ?

I think there is an argument that the decision making around the need for another lockdown is driven by hysteria and we would achieve far more if we could persuade people to follow the social distancing rules, because no matter how long the lockdown it will only bring a temporary reprieve if any at all.

That said, we have been driven to this point by the media. The abuse that the government got after the first wave of pandemic for allegedly putting lives at risk, means that ministers want to err on the side of caution. They (the media) have also ranted about following the lead of other countries in Europe - oh and guess what they are going into lockdown !

PS - can someone turn these bloody bats off !!!!!!

What bats?

Good to see another major policy announced on a Friday night though.

Well, it's not the first time something has been "announced " via the Tory press late at night.

seems a bit daft - but looks like press conference later so they must have their knickers in a twist

Can’t even get the time for a press conference right and in the middle of football and rugby. You couldn’t make it up ?

Keeps being pushed back. Rumours suggest Tory MPs descending on Number 10 against the proposed measures. Good on them.

Knutsfordian... are you talking to yourself? Second sign of madness after choosing to support Witton

Four week lockdown it is from Thursday. Schools and universities remain open though!
