Memory Corner

Continued.
A formal protest has since been lodged by the Victoria club. With regard to the general character of the play,it is only necessary to add it was brilliant throughout.
Although it is not in the report,The Welsh Association awarded the game to Wrexham 1-0.
Damn I was no where near

Tim in those days the referees were not the same as today, the rules of the game were not the same. The umpires were not linesmen, but were usually one from each side and acted more in a advisory role, and most decisions were done with agreement of both side's,thus the dispute in the Wrexham game. Also have you noticed in the reports of the early games there's no mention of off-side,not sure if they had them.(will be interesting to find out)or does anyone know?

I do not believe offside was introduced for a while but one thing I do know is that vics where involved in the first ever award of a penalty kick

Does anyone know the answers to the Nelson Question's?

One of the answer's to the Nelson is.
Vics first played them on 23-2-1914 away losing 0-2,in the return game Vics won 4-1.
It was in the Lancashire Combination Div 1.
Here's another Question.
How many team's in 1874's league now, have Vics played in league games in the past?.

Here's another Question.
How many team's in 1874's league now, have Vics played in league games in the past?.

Here we go Toddy, had to do some reading up on this but hopefully I have a few.

The obvious one is AFC Darwen. Their predecessors Darwen FC joined the Vics as founder members of the Football League Division 2 in 1892-93. They gained promotion that year and continued to play in the Football League until 1899. They joined the Vics in the Lancashire Combination in 1912 and remained alongside us in that league until 1919.

I have a feeling that Vics must have come across the original Hanley Town FC in their early years, as the two clubs formations coincided and they played in similar competitions at the time. However, they folded in 1912 and I found very little detail on them until the 1960s when they started again.

We narrowly missed out on playing Ashton Town in 1912 in the Lancs Combination, as they resigned in 1911 and we signed up the following year.

Also, whilst not strictly a League game, we played Widnes Vikings back in 1876! Northwich Victoria in their early years, like many Clubs at the time, played both Association and Rugby rules football. They accepted a challenge from what was then Farnworth & Appleton FC (soon to become Widnes FC until adopting "Vikings" 1996) for a double headed game of Football, with a Rugby rules game to be played away, and an Association rules game to be played at the Drill Field. Vics won both games.

Any more Toddy?

Jamie Vics also played Formby, does anyone know, when and what in,and what the score was?.They also played another town team any one know who in the league 1874 are in now (who?).

Jamie you are right about Hanley Town,I will give you the details later.

Atherton is another team Vics played in the Lancashire Combination Div 1 and 2 before the first World War,winning 3 and losing 3.

The first time Vics played a team from Hanley was 16-3-1878,when they beat Hanley Rangers 1-0 away.
The next time they met another team from Hanley was in The Combination, when they played Hanley on 22-9-1894 at home losing 2-3.They later played them that season away on 24-11-1894 losing 0-2.

The answer's to the Witton Question's answer's.
On 25-12-1950 Witton lost to Nelson 1-2 in the F.A cup on The Central Ground before 7,607 gate.Witton had beaten Vics 4-2 in the previous round at Witton before 6'200 Fans.(yesterday I was talking to a Nelson chap who was at the game,he said their keeper played a blinder, and still remembers it to this day).
The second game Witton played them was on 21-11-1953 in the F.A. cup. This time Witton won 4-1 the gate was 6,063.Witton went on to play Grimsby at the Central Ground drawing 1-1 the gate was 7'173,they went on to lose the replay 1-6 before 5'370 fans.
Are they any Witton or Vics fans out there who remember any of those games?.

I have another question toddy. The vics were the first team to beat Liverpool in the FA cup do you have any info on this game?

Tim I don't know if this the game you mean.
On 24-10-1891 Vics played Liverpool Stanley winning 9-0 in the 2rd Qual round.
The goal scorer's were McLaughin,Robinson five,Leather,Pickering,Hayes,the gate was 1,500.
On 19-11-1893 Vics beat Liverpool in the 3rd Qual 2-1,Fecitt scoring two,the gate was 3,000.
The next round Vics beat Liverpool Caledonians (4th Qual)3-2 Hargreaves,Parry own goal,Bradshaw scoring .
Vic got knocked out by Blackburn Rovers in the 2rd round 1-4,Hargreaves scoring.

The next match report I will be doing is,Vics v Newcastle United in the Division 2 match played on 18-11-1893 played at The Drill Field.Anyone wish to guess the score?.

Northwich Victoria v Newcastle United 18-11-1893.
Weather of a more unsuitable description for outdoor amusements than that which prevailed on Saturday afternoon could not be imagined. It was wretched in the extreme.A peering cold wind blew with almost hurricane force, and the driving sleet made matters still worse.Under such circumstances it was surprising to find between 300 and 400 persons congregated on The Drill Field. The bad weather proved very unfortunate for the home club,as under more favourable conditions there
would no doubt have been a very good gate,The teams were composed as follows.
Northwich.Hornby.Guest and Postles.Scanlan,Savage and Mates.Finnerhan.Meredith.Baily.Bray and Drinkwater.
Newcastle United.Lowery.Jeffrey and Miller.M'Kain.Graham and Creilly.Quinn.Crate.Thompson.Wallace and Gillespie.
Mr Roche,of Liverpool,was the referee.
To Be Continued.

Continued.cannot
The visitor's were lucky enough to win the toss. They of course chose to play with the gale at their backs.Owing to the storm, anything like scientific or reliable football was almost impossible. With very little effort, the United managed to keep the ball in the Victoria territory during the greater part of the first half. The invaders swarmed about the local goal, and attacked with great vigour, numerous corner kicks falling to their lot.The Northwich defence was simply grand, and too much praise cannot be given to Hornby for the really splendid way in which he saved his goal.Only two or three visits of a dangerous character to the Newcastle end,Lowery, the custodian, cleverly stopping a couple of telling shots put in by Finnerhan and Meredith Five minutes from half time, and just as the Victoria supporters were beginning to congratulate themselves upon seeing a clean sheet for the commencement of the second period,United scored out of a scrimmage in front of goal.
To be Continued.

The battle against the elements and not to be despised body of Northerners took a lot of the steel of the Northwich men.A cup of hot coffee revived them, however, and they resumed hostilities with a determination to win.The game had not been in progress five minutes before Meredith equalized with a pretty shot.Newcastle retaliated to some purpose, for in the next ten minutes they scored two goals, one being got by ball accidentally bounding in the net off Scanlan. For a short time, the Victorians showed signs of breaking up,and as time went on without any success, some of the onlookers began whistling the "Dead March".But they were premature,as subsequent events proved. The home forwards initiated an onward movement.and from this stage pressed incessantly.Meredith registered a second goal, and Scanlan got an equalizing point amid loud cheers, which were renewed directly afterwards, when Meredith put his team ahead.Bailey, with a fine shot ,put on goal No5 in the last minute and the match resulted Northwich Victoria 5 Newcastle United 3.
The next match report will be Witton Albion v Newton Rangers(Middlewich)18-11-1893.

As promised,the Witton report.
This match was played at Witton before a mere handful of spectators,in the most wretched weather. The visitors won the toss, and elected to play with the wind, but there was no judgment of the ball, which was out of play nearly all the time.Tideswell, the home goalkeeper, had one or two good shots to stop.About ten minutes before half-time the Albion forwards made a grand rush, and Peery scored a goal.Soon after the re-start Harris scored again, and now the home team having the wind in their favour they soon piled on eight goals, winning by nine goals to none.

Offside used to be three of the defending team between the forward(s) and the goal up until the mid 1920's. No idea why it never gets a mention in reports, then!
Maybe the linesmen of the time didn't have a bib to wave. ;)
