Who'd be a referee?...

This might interest you stebiggy.Back in the 1960s I was running the line in a Cheshire League game at canal street, between Runcorn and Tranmere Reserve's.The referee awarded a pen to Runcorn, the score was 1-1,Runcorn scored but the ref made them take it again he said a forward had encroached into the area,as I was supposed to be watching for this,I did not see the encroachment the ref had taken it upon himself to make the decision, although he was watching for the goalkeeper moving on the line.Anyway Runcorn missed the retaken pen Tranmere went straight up the field and scored winning the game 2-1.when the final whistle went (Iwas at the bottom end away from the dressing rooms)some of the fans jumped over the fence I legged it passing the ref shouting to him to run but he was not fast enough,he got a kick up the back side. When we got to the dressing rooms the police came in and said that some of the fans were waiting outside, they would give us an escort one at a time to our cars.As I was change first I was the first to go,my car was parked some way from the ground,I was walking between two policemen, the were many comments made to me on that walk none of them complementary.Every time I ran the line or refereed at Canal street after that I was never forgiven for a decision I did not make (happy days). At last I'v put the record straight.

I have to be honest when sitting at 1874 I am sometimes ashamed at the barrage of sarcasm and near abuse that is directed at referees and whichever linesman is closest.
At NWCL level we get referees at the start of their careers and those who for various reasons have reached their best level and won't go further.
One thing our club can claim is that it has done it's bit to make their job more unpleasant and less satisfying.
Rant over.

I've heard it too, but it's nothing compared to others in our league!

Linnets in particular have an issue due to their ground layout. The ref has a really long walk to the changing rooms from the pitch past the fans exiting the ground. It makes it impossible for them to steward the fans away who want to give an earful to the officials.

We're lucky that the ground layout at Winsford gives a pretty wide and short "tunnel" area.

It's not the access or exiting from the pitch it's the continual abuse and sarcasm during the match.

The one thing I keep trying to say to people is that they do it for free (at our level) and there would be no game without them. I really don't think they intentionally make bad decisions.

Chubbs do it for free?sorry Chubbs they get payed for junior games.

I know from my time in the first season as sec, Toddy that we only paid them expenses, any other payment if any would be from the FA and I was under the impression that at step 7 that wasn't anything.

Chubbs for my time as a referee we always got payed plus exspenses. If we refereed in the Northwich Senior League(this is going from memory)we got 7s/6p plus 6pence a mile exspenses,Mid-Cheshire league 15shillings and 6pence a mile or second class rail fare, the linesman would get 7s/6p plus the same exspenses. The Cheshire League was the grand sum of £2-2shillings with the same exspences as above, the linesman half that amount with the same expenses.Where you might be getting mixed up Chubbs is in Cup Finals where the official's either got the fee and exspences or the medal and exspences(that included the F.A. Cup final)The clubs payed the officials in the League games and the F.As. payed in the Finals.

All I know on this Toddy is that when I was secretary, as a club, we paid expenses only. Maybe Vicki or Rob could clear this up?
