Local places of interest | With a population of about 12000 Market Drayton is one of the 3 major market towns in Shropshire. Most of the oldest properties were burnt to the ground in 1650 but one still exists at Cotton’s house in Shropshire Street, but there are many fine examples of buildings since then still extant. 1459 saw the opening battle of the War of the Roses at nearby Blore Heath and in 1835 the Birmingham and Liverpool canal was cut through one of the deepest canal cuttings in the country at Tyrley locks. |
