Hanley Rangers v Northwich Victoria 16-3-1878.
The return match between these clubs took place at the Finney Gardens,Hanley,on Saturday last.Owing to the Victorias being pressed for time,it was arranged to play for only an hour and twenty minutes. At 3-25pm,Wright,the Hanley captain, kicked off.For a considerable time neither side was able to score, though several shots were made by both teams. At 3-50 it was found out by the umpires that the Rangers were playing twelve men instead of eleven. After one of them had left the field the leather was again set in motion. Both sides now fought with redoubled energy to gain some advantage. At length the ball was brought in close proximity to the Hanley goal, when Earlam made a well directed shot, which passed under the tape. After a little more plucky play half time was called and ends changed.

The Victorias now kicked off the ball.Fox ran up in good time, took it from one of the backs, and sent it flying just over his opponents tape. The next noteworthy incident was a good run by Wright, who skilfully evaded the backs, passed the ball to one of his side, who in turn sent it between the posts. This however was disallowed,on the ground of "off side".Curbishley and Wright again made strenuous efforts to score for their side:but through the superior staying power of the Northwich team, their attempts were always thwarted. Finally the Victorias won by one goal to none.

Northwich Victoria v Chester College, 23-3-1878.
Northwich.Earlam
The return match between these clubs came off in the Drill Field,Northwich,on Saturday afternoon last,in the presence of a large number of spectators, who manifested the liveliest interest in the game from beginning to end. This was the last match of the season on the programme of the Victoria club, and it need scarcely be said that the members were somewhat anxious that their play for 1877-78 should closed with something better than defeat. The club had suffered considerably since last season through the loss of several of it's best players, who had been compelled to retire by a variety of causes over which they had no control.Notwithstanding this drawback, the club can still muster a team that does it credit, and on the whole, sustains the reputation which it has gained in the football world. The team chosen for Saturday last was a tolerably strong one,but unfortunately two of the principal players-Lomas(forward)and Musgrave(goal)-did not turn up,and substitutes had to be found amongst the members who happened to be on the ground. The struggle in store for them was consequently a more sever one,for the College representatives are usually formidable foes, and the team that came over to Northwich was by no means composed of second rate men.The following were the sides.
Chester College.Lobb,Mylie,Owen,Diggle,Rowland,and Ceulthurst,Perkins,Howard,and O'Donnell,Hallam,Glascodine(captain)Goal.
Northwich.Earlam(captain),Brookes,T.Southern.Pye,Joseph Barlow.and J.Hughes,Russell,and G.Hughes,Butterworth.and Hitchin.F.Hughes,(goal).

Here is an interesting fact for you.A couple of weeks ago I did a match report on the game between Northwich Victoria v Rotherham Town played in 1894 at the Drill Field. The goalkeeper for Rotherham in that game was Arthur Wharton, who was the worlds first black professional footballer. He is to be honoured with a statue 125 years after he stepped out to play for Rotherham. He was also the worlds fastest man,he was the first man to run 100 yards in 10 seconds flat.He became a miner in later life and died in his 30s.

The weather was not favourable for football, the wind being inconveniently strong for the players and uncounfortably cold for the onlookers.Play commenced at about 3-15,the visitors having the wind against them in the first half. The contest proceeded with great vigour and earnestness, both sides giving evidences of their determination to make the fight as"hot"as possible. The Victorias for a long time kept the ball in the enemy's quarters, and the goal they were besieging several times very norrowly escaped falling into their hands, and the play of Earlam,Russell,Barlow, and Southern being consieuously fine.Glascodine defended his charge in splendid style;indeed had not it been for his consummate skill, the goal must inevitably have been taken more than once. The Collegians supsequently made some separate attacks upon the Victoria goal, which on one or two occasions appeared in great peril;but the Northwichers went in combined force to the rescue, and succeeded in averting the catastrophe.Up to half time, there was no score by either side.

The change of ends for the second half was a disadvantage to the Victorians, insomuch as they had the wind against them.During the remainder of the game both teams worked with great energy, and the play was very exciting. The visitors profited by having the wind in their favour, and put their opponents more upon the defensive. Both goals were occasionally endagered ,but neither side succeeded in scoring, and the match consequently resulted in a draw.A few minutes before the call of time the Chester goal was within an ace of being captured. From a brilliant shot by Earlam, the ball stuck the goal post, and rebounded on the outside. In a minute or two afterwards the ball was taken in front of the same goal, and a very tight scrimmage ensued, the leather being within a foot or two of the coveted spot. The Cestrians however showed a determined resistance, and finally freed their castle from danger.Owing to the strong wind;the kicking on both sides seemed rather wild;but the visitors exhibited a decided surperiority in the art of passing over their opponents.A little more study of the most important feature of the game of football would greatly imprve the play of the Victorias, and assist them in gaining fresh laurels.
The Wincham brass band was pressent during the afternoon.
During the season the Victorias played 27 matches,of which seventeen were won,six drawn, and four lost. The goals kicked in their favour numbered 72;While 16 have been kicked against them.

Wincham Victoria v St George's Rangers.31-11-1878.
The first match between these clubs(Association rules)was played at Wincham,on Saturday last, and resulted in a victory by seven goals(two disputed)to nil.The visitors having won the toss decided to play downhill;and Ridge, the Wincham captain, started the ball at three o'clock. The ball being smartly returned, some sharp play ensued;after a few minutes Ridge obtained possession of the ball and having dribbled it along, kicked the first goal for Wincham. After this the play was tolerably even;but by degrees the ball was worked to the visitors quarters and Taylor then kicked the second goal for Wincham.Soon afterwards a corner kick fell to the home team, but they failed to turn it to their advantage. The ball was then passed to Taylor, who again sent it through the posts. This goal was disputed goal was disputed by the visitors umpire, and the game was delayed for a time, and as the umpires did not agree in their interpration of the "Off Side"rule,it was arranged that during the second half time this rule should be disregarded;this being the ordinary play of the Rangers.Nothing further of note occurred up to half time.

After changing ends the home team still continued to have the beast of the game, two goals being kicked by Taylor in quick succession. After this the visitors managed to carry the ball to their opponents end,and a corner kick and throw in fell to them;but they failed to score, the Wincham goal keeper cleverly averting the attack.Soon after,Ridge kicked another goal, making six for Wincham. The light was now very bad;but after a corner kick for the home team,a scrimmage took place close to the visitors goal, and the ball was sent through posts by Preston. The visitors, however, claimed a foul, and the goal was registered as disputed. For the winners,Ridge,Taylor, and Turnbull, forwards played well, and Holland, back made some good kicks. For the visitors Staden, the captain, did most service.

Northwich Victoria v Everton. 31-12-1881.
The return match between these clubs came off at Northwich on Saturday. When the teams first met at Everton early in the season, the Northwich club was poorly represented, and the Evertonians scored a decisive victory;but they had the tables turned on them on Saturday, the Victorias defeating them in a unmistakable fashion. The sides were as follows.
Northwich.Hitchen.F.Hughes.Butterworth.W.Hughes.Russell.Capper(Captain).Plant.Turnbull.Dobell.Vernon.Spruce.
Everton.Richardson.Evans(captain).Marriatt.F.G.Heaton.Morris.J.McGill.Higgins.Provan.D.H.Williams.Richard.Parry.
Mr.G.J.Hughes acted as umpire for Northwich, and Mr.W.Jones for Everton.Mr C.J.Hughes acted as referee.

The home players had the best of the game all though, and ultimately they won by six goals to two.Capper obtained three goals,Dobell one,Spruce one,and Plant one.The Victorians played remarkably well to a man,the performances of Plant and Russell being especially conspicuous. For the last half hour they played without Turnbull, who was obliged to leave to fulfil another engagement. The visitors were a fine lot of men,and paid a good deal of attention to passing;but they were outmatched. The result of the contest has given much satisfaction in"home circles"as this was the first reverse that the"Invincible Black Watch"-as the Everton club styles itself-has suffered during the present season.

Barnton Rovers v Surlach Wanderers on 21-11-1890.
This match was played at Surlach on Saturday. The visitors won the toss, and elected to play with the wind against them. From the kick-off they began to press, and soon scored their first point. They still kept up the pressure, and soon obtained goal No2.After the change of ends the Rovers seemed to have more than ever their own way,and immediately put on the third goal, which was quickly followed by two others,Surllach soon afterwards had a look in,and obtained their one and only goal. The game endind Barnton 5 goals Surlach 1.
The next match report will be,Knutsford v Middlewich Victoria played on the same day as the above game.

I used to go to the drill field with my grandad to england u162 play do you have any reports of matches involving international teams?

Match report .Knutsford V Middlewich Victoria,21-11-1890.
This cup tie was played at Knutsford on Saturday in the presence of 400 spectators. The visitors were very strongly represented, and brought a large number of followers with them. The home team who have been unfortunate of late, were unable to raise their strongest team,as Harlow, who was down to play, drew out at the last moment Richarson donned the jersey in his place. The present team is not a patch on the team of last season at the commencement of this.We find such well known names as J.H.Dean,C.A.Lees,T.Cash and others are missing.Knutsford won the toss and elected to play up hill. The visitors kicked off and made an excursion into the home quarters, but Vickers with a great kick transferred play to the other end.Play of a give-and-take character ensued, the defence of both teams being severely taxed.Gidman just succeeded in fisting out a high dropping shot, when he was charged through the goal, and Egerton at the other end had to save several times, owing to some well meant efforts by Redfern and Buckley. When the half time arrived neither side had scored.

On changing ends both teams went into the fray with great energy and Middlewich were rewarded with the first goal amist the enthusiastic cheers of their partisans,Knutsford claimed for off side but the referee(Mr.E.Turnbull,of Northwich)gave it a goal.Nothing daunted, the home team went with a rush, and Vickers(who had gone forward)was conspicuous with some neat play, and eventually a good short passing movement between Vickers,Buckley and Redfern resulted in Buckley equalizing. It should be mentioned that previous to this Redfern was severely stunned, and play was discontinued for a short time.Darkness was now setting in rapidly and it was difficult to distinguish the players. No further score was made.
