Northwich Victoria v Leftwich Britannia played on 23-2-1878.
This match was played on the ground of the Britannia. The Victorias kicked off,and following well up,a scrummage took place near the Britannia goal, and Hitchen cleverly put the ball through. The play during the first half was entirely at the Britannia end,and numerous shots were made at goal, but without effect. Some went over the tape, others outside the posts, and the goalkeeper(who played excellently throughout the game)warded off the rest.In the second half the game was better contested, the Britannia played very well together;and once Britannia almost succeeded in scoring. The Victorias also made many attacks on their opponents goal;but Robinson warded them off,and no further score was made by either side;the Victorias thus winning a pleasant game by one goal to nil.

Northwich Victoria v Hanley Half Holiday played on 20-2-1878.

Northwich Victoria v Hanley Half Holiday on 20-2-1878.
This return match took place at the Drill Field Leftwich,Thursday afternoon last, and was witnessed by a considerable number of spectators. The Victorias won the toss, and the ball was soon near the Hanley goal,Earlam kicking it over the tape;after the kick out the ball was again brought along by the Victorias and a sever struggle took place in the mouth of the Hanley goal, the custodian ultimately saving his charge by a fine piece of play. The leather was now taken to the other end,and Brown getting past the backs sent the ball between the post, thus scoring a goal for the visitors. After half time(with the exception of the occasional runs by Brown and Curbishley)the play was mostly carried on in the Hanley quarters, and nothing but the splendid play of their goal keeper save them from defeat.

Time after time the Victorias tried to capture the Hanley goal, but were always thwarted by the goalkeeper, who defended his charge in a marvellous manner.A few seconds before time,Hitchen adroitly passed the ball to Earlam in front of the Hanley goal, and the latter made a splendid shot, but the goalkeeper again just saved his side;and the call of time found the score unaltered.
The next match reports will be the two F.A Cup games against Peterborough Utd in 1976,how many of you remember them?.

Northwich Victoria v Peterborough United 11-12-1976.F.A.Cup 2rd Round.
Had it not been for the magnificent efforts of Vics ground staff in countering the midnight frost,Saturday's F.A. Cup-tie at the Drill Field might never have been started, let alone become abandoned at 3-35pm because of fog.And thus among the near 7,000 crowd who may have felt cheated at the premature finish, should reflect that football would have been £3,753 the poorer had not director John Houghton and his team worked so hard from near dawn. They re-doubled their efforts on the frostbound pitch when referee Lowe arrived at 11-30am and said he would give a final decision 90 minutes later. This he did with a"Thumbs Up"sign and by kick off time, conditions were as good as could be expected.
Surprisingly enough, for most of us felt Vics would come of best after their ice-romp against Scarborough the previous week,it was Posh who always looked the most comfortable.Weathering early Northwich raids which progressed by means of free-kicks,The Third Division men immediately settled down to demonstrate that they possessed many players a class anything Rochdale had to offer.
It was after 15 minutes that a bank of fog similar to that which threatened the Scarborough match began to roll over the River Dane.Once Northwich Parish Church tower became invisible from the stand,it was only a matter of time before the Drill Field is enveloped and the match was doomed even before Posh established their lead.

Thanks Edge.
Here's a Question,who scores Peterborough's goal?.

No idea - my memory of the game is leaving via the Dane Bank exit and seeing a few bricks flying through the air.
Think there was a bumper of a Ford Transit being wielded as well.

Missed the 4-0 due to school Nativity duty, although we were a wise man down.

The goal materialised in the 22nd minute, when Oakes moved up field and presented Nixon with a chance to hook the ball home fiercely from the edge of the penalty area.Goalkeeper Farmer, five yards off his line in an attempt to keep in touch with proceedings, could scarcely have seen the ball as it flashed past him.
Three minutes later referee Lowe rightly took the players off to allow 10 minutes for the fog to clear. This it never appeared likely to do and a loudspeaker announcement of the abandonment was greeted with loud cheers by relieved Northwich fans, unworried at not getting their moneysworth. They had clearly seen enough to consider that Vics were in trouble,a point substantiated by manager Paul Ogden, who told me later;"The fog has given us a reprieve;Posh looked very useful, but at least it's given us a chance of figuring in the third round draw.Noel Cantwell,Posh's famous chief, commented"We always looked comfortable and I was pleased with the way my team settled down straight away in difficult conditions".

Top of the F.A. cup pops. That's nonstop never say die Northwich Victoria the swinging Northern Premier League part-timers.Their switched on supporters sang and danced in the streets of the quiet little Mid-Cheshire market town last night.
And on January 8,when Elton John takes his fourth Division Watford and all that jazz to the Drill Field ground for the first F.A.cup third round in Northwich's 100 years history, they are going to have a ball.
For the moment though the theme song in Northwich has to be"A Foggy Day"Without it on Saturday when conditions stopped Peterborough in their tracks after 25 minutes when a goal in front this non-league dream result could never have come true.
Poor Peterborough so sure of themselves over the weekend and so composed when they resumed couldn't believe it.As they trooped off the 5,070 spilled on to the pitch chanting"Easy Easy"and then "Send in Victoria".Peterborough nick named the Posh, had died by that same swashbuckling sword that they once wielded themselves as the famed and feared giantkillers of the Fifties.
Looking at it dispassionatly,if that is possible, four goals probably flattered the Premier league boys a trifle.

But in the last half hour they literally ran the bemused Third Division men off their feet.Former Manchester City star Derek Jeffries on loan to Peterborough from Crystal Palace admitted"We never imagined anything like this. They really put the cosh on us.They're the best non-league team I've ever seen".The vital psychological breakthrough came in 25 minutes with the suggestion of offside about it.Phil Jones a dynamo in midfield won possession when he rose above a towering Peterborough defence and nodded leading scoer Phil Smith clear ten yards out. With the whole defence static all Northwich suddenly erupted as he clipped it sweet and low, past keeper Keith Waugh low into the corner.
It was still a slog, though Peterborough never had the enthusiasm of men like Jones,Les Wain and Johnny King.Jones had his name taken for a foul on John Cozens and Albie Nieman was also cautioned. But there was nothing about Northwich to suggest a vicious streak.Vics won it on industry and organisation. And though Jeffries disputed a foul on Smith in 63 minutes, which gave Wain his chance to make it 2-0 from the spot, you couldn't argue with the next two.
Jeff Swede went superbly round Waugh from a measured King pass to slot in the third. But the best was reserved for the last minute, when Smith soared Spectacularly to head in a Swede cross.
It was a fitting finale to the Vics greatest hour.
A Question for you.
Who was Vics Manager?.

Here's a clue to who that manager was his initials were P.O.

Middlesborough v Northwich Victoria 3-3-1894.
The Victoria team made the long journey to Middlesborough on Saturday to fulfill their league fixture with the Ironopolis club. The game throughout was much in favour of the visitors, but they were unfortunately, greatly hampered by rough play by on the part of their opponents. Two or three of the Victorians were badly knocked about, and ultimately the referee ordered one of the Middlesborough men off the field. The spectators were also extremely unruly and the remarks they directed to the referee were such as to make the gentleman's position anything but a comfortable one.The official result of the game was two goals to one in favour of Ironopolis.Northwich however scored a second goal, but it was disallowed on the plea of off-side,much to the surprise of the team.

Saltney Borderers v Barnton Rovers 10-3-1894.
Played at Saltney before a fair attendance.Barnton won the toss, and the Borderers kicked off against a strong wind and sun.Barnton scored in five minutes, and the Borderers attacked and had hard luck.M'Hugh headed passed. The homesters scored a corner, but nothing came of it.A foul against Saltney, and then Parkinson almost scored for Saltney, but the strong wind spoilt his effort. The Borderers were now pressing strongly, several good shots being sent in.The Rovers got away and forced a corner, which proved abortive.M'Hugh put in a beauty, but the goalkeeper saved grandly. The J.Burlinson equalized.Phillips for the homesters almost gained a point, following which the visitors had a chance, but the ball was sent passed.Half-Time score-Saltney 1 goal Barnton 1 goal.
Resuming,Barnton were first to show up,and C.Burlinson put in a shot, which Sheldon saved grandly,by giving a corner.Saltney howerver continued to press, and adding two goals retired winners by three goals to one.

Weaverham St Mary's v Wincham Victoria 10-3-1894.
Played at Weaverham on Saturday.Wincham won the toss, and elected to play with the wind and sun a their backs. The visitors at once began to press but the home backs kept them at bay. From a breakaway by the home forwards, and a good centre by Lloyds,Hickton scored with a good shot. The visitors kept the ball in the home goal up to the interval, but could not score. From the restart the homesterers were soon round the visitors goal, and a good run by the visiting forwards resulting in them scoring,Then the home team soon put on two more, and a rather rough game ended in a win for the home team by three goals to one.
The next match report will be Northwich Victoria v Rotherham Town on 31-12-1894 in the Football League Division 2.

Northwich Victoria v Rotherham Town 31-12-1894...
This League fixture was decided on the Drill Field,in beautiful weather,on Saturday.Considerable interest was manifested in the encounter owing to the fact that the Rotherham eleven included four old Victorians and one ex member of the Castle True Blues.Rotherham winning the toss, took advantage of the sun and wind, and defended the Leftwich goal. They were not long in making tracks for Hornby.Leather intercepted a nice pass from Rae,but Scanlan headed out.The next minute Pickering shot into Hornby's hands;the clearance was very imperfect, and Leather at once rushed up and placed it in the net,the goal being secured after three minutes play.Rotherham came again in pretty fashion from the kick off,and Scanlan missing his kick.

Leather had an opening, but shot outside. For some time the visitors pressed severely, and the home forwards scarcely made any headway.Up to this point,Stanley, who had only just recovered from a serious illness and was called upon to play at the last minute, had been in the forward rank, but was put back in his old position at half back, and Eyres was placed in the vanguard. The result was a marked improvement in the play.Bailey and Drinkwater each made nice runs, but were pulled up by Nesbitt, who conceded an ineffectual corner to the last named forward.A nice effort on the part of Bailey gave Hatton a splendid chance, but he shot at random. The visitors continued to have the best of the argument, but many nice combined efforts were nullified by Leather standing offside.Rae forced Hornby to grant a corner, but danger was averted by Barr handling.Hatton raced away at full speed, successfully evading Barr and Hobson. He let fly at Wharton, who had only just time to touch the ball before Bailey wihizzed into the net, thus drawing level after the game had been in operation about half an hour.Half time one goal each.
The second half.

On changing ends, the Victorians fought desperately to obtain the lead. The defence, however, was wonderfully sound,Hobson in particular being a tower of strength.Northwich had very hard lines in not scoring, one shot of Finnernan's striking the upright.Whenever the visiting forwards tried to get away they were driven back by Scanlan and Postles, and the Victorians resumed the bombardment with renewed energy.Nearly a dozen corners fell to their lot,yet to do what they would they could not penetrate Wharton's charge.Hornby was not called upon to touch the ball more than once, and whenever Pickering or Leather got within shooting range they sent far and wide. The game ended one goal each.
The next match report will be.Northwich Victoria v Hanley Rangers played on 16-3-1878
