Actually Mr Wilkes the attendance was 1288..... where were these additional 400 odd people ?
 
I read that and his comments on the gate, he must have been getting confused between 74 and Vics in his senior years.
 
To be fair, it is possible the writer cocked it up and put 1700 instead of 1200. On the other hand it is not the only place in the story where it seems to have been turned from the straight to the crooked path.
