For those having "issues" with the new-fangled forum-speak ...

A PM is not a PM any more on here, it's a "conversation", but essentially it works in exactly the same time-honoured tradition:

EITHER:
Click on the name of the person you want to send a message to ...
A window appears, including the option "start a conversation"
Click on this option
Type your message
Click "Start conversation" at the bottom (or preview it, or upload something)

OR:
Click on your "Inbox" - top right on the main/front page
A window appears, including the option "start a (new) conversation"
Click on this option
Type in the User Name of the person you want to send the message to in the "Participants" box
Type your message
Click "Start conversation" at the bottom (or preview it, or upload something)

ADDED FEATURES:
You can hold a three-way, four-way etc conversation if you wish - to do so from the start, just put all the User Names into the Participants box that you want to send the message to, then proceed as above.

If you send a message to one person, but want to allow them (or you) to add someone else into the conversation later, there is a tick box below the message box to allow this.

You can even send a message one way only, with no right of reply - again, there is a tick box for this below the message box.

INBOX:
This is where messages from others (conversations) will appear - click on the one you want to read in the list and it will open as a "conversation" - essentially your own private thread with someone.
