The Hare and Hounds which is just outside the ground is a cracking boozer with 5 ales + ciders on tap.

Well that was hard to watch, totally unrecognisable from the team who showed so much character and fight last Monday. I 100% believe in Rory, I just hope he is learning more about this squad after each game. For me it's the midfield, we need someone who can control a game and set the tempo. It's like we're playing 4-4-2 with inverted wingers, I'd like to see McGrath and Kenny use some width but it all seems so central. Padiham were bang average today we handed it to them, some fed-up faces walking out, but lets stay together we go again next week vs Atherton and then Hanley away the following Tuesday 👊 💚

Very disappointing today.

We just have no cutting edge and I don’t see where the goals are coming from. I felt we were weaker when John and Kevin were subbed off. John is easily one of our most creative players and has some quality and can make things happen and Kevin at least holds the ball up and has a bit of height.

All made worse because Padiham were poor and very beatable and did little aside from the goals which were both avoidable from our point of view.

I know we’re only five games in and a long way to go but if we can’t get results against the likes of Padiham it’s already feeling like a long hard season of struggle ahead. Not just that but Jonah, Elliott, Tom Mitchell and John Clarke all sidelined. A lot of quality gone there also. Trying to stay positive but it’s hard…

You can't give a penalty away in the first 8 minutes and expect to control the game.
First half after going 1-0 up, Padiham kicked high and long every time they got the ball. Not pretty, but effective in the circumstances. They fell down at the slightest contact and continually disrupted the flow of the game. Having said that, we did not do enough to counter this, continually playing into their hands by pumping long balls forward to one man against 2 defenders.
Second half was slightly better with the introduction of runners in midfield, but a failure to deal with another high ball into the box gifted their forward a chance to lob our keeper.
I'm sure that Rory will sort it out, but we need a midfield that can control and keep the ball and play it forward on the floor.
Shout out to Matt Woolley who runs himself ragged for as long as he can, however he can't do it himself or for 90 minutes.

Very poor display today against a mediocre side at best. Especially first half which was terrible with too many passes to the opposition. No height in the opposition box as a result we hardly win a ball.
I agree we need more creativity in midfield- it is far too static.
No one seems to create much in the penalty area as a result we never looked like scoring.
The two new players who came on in second half looked promising and we did play better but without that all important clinical edge.
All in all a disappointing effort.

So disappointing to lose a game which we should be winning. Watched a far different team today from Monday.

When McGrath went off the creativity seemed to dip - John really seems to be flourishing so far this season! Midfield needs some exploration in my opinion and hopefully we see that starting to grow with Mundy and Brindle being brought in.

I know that we are battling having a few with injuries, as well as from today some suspensions - not having them makes a difference but we need to learn to adapt and not rely on them in the game.

We keep going. Learn from the mistakes today and change them for Saturday's game against Atherton Colleries. 💚🖤💜

Wasn't there so can't comment on performance but these are the type of games we need to be winning, it seems that some are now starting to see the problems with the midfield that I saw even in the win against Rossington in the FA cup, the midfield two of Blake and Jonah just doesn't work as they're both similar types of players who are good on the ball and breaking up play and winning the ball back but lack that creative forward pass, I think up front we have some technically good players like Kenny, Evra and McGrath and Kev can hold the ball up and has got good link up play but imo we are missing a real out and out quality number 9 who is going to score 25+ for us, we have players who can play up front but it doesn't seem to be their natural position, hopefully the two new lads coming in will help to fix that but it's a problem that Rory needs to find an answer to ssap

Two combative and energetic CM’s is exactly what we need in the system that we are currently deploying, we shouldn’t rely on them to then be creative also (which Blake actually is in some of the balls I’ve seen him pick out and then join attacks). How Jonah is even in the discussion when he wasn’t even on the pitch yesterday is wild. We are playing FOUR forwards in the wingers and strikers and it’s their responsibility to link up and make things happen. IMO, Spinelli looks to be a quality number 9 if we play to him and have runners off him, which I’ve rarely seen in the games I’ve watched this season - the goal against VM is exactly what we should be doing to teams with him up top. Playing 2 up top and not making many chances up there is a cause for concern but we are also a very new squad and have been picking up points with key players injured also.

Just a stat fact on this point - happy to stand corrected if any of it is incorrect. Blake/Jonah started the first 4x games in the middle together. (Rossington, Newcastle, Chasetown & Prescot) - we won 2/4 of those games. And the other 2 were narrow 1-0 defeats.

Following that we have played Horbury x2, Blythe,, Vauxhall & Padiham- albeit Jonah/Blake started the VM game together, they only played in that duo for 2 minutes. So that is 5 games where the duo haven’t played together, we have drawn 2 and lost 3 of those following fixtures. So being that that duo haven’t played in that ‘duo’ together for 5 games, and we won 2/4 they did, while not being sure I can allow the VM as counting since Jonah dropped to cb following Mitchell’s early red. I’m not so sure on that narrative you’ve built on the pairing, as when I’ve seen them play in that duo and battle I’ve been impressed with them both and the stats back that up.

You are also aware that the wingers are classed as part of that midfield and are generally who we would look at to get quality balls in the box - when those midfield battlers win it back, it’s generally the wingers they would be looking for, who should be hitting the channels in the space to run at defenders to create such opportunities and/or making space also for the strikers in the middle to find space. But they rather appear to be pulling inside and looking like inverted wingers instead.

We’ve got a lad the size and build of Spinelli but aren’t getting into those wide areas enough to create the chances a player like him compliments.

If you read my comment I said that both Jonah and Blake are good at winning the ball back but imo aren't as good creatively for the forward players, your right that the wingers should be giving us width and getting the ball into a central striker and as I also pointed out we have a number of players who can play anywhere along the forward line but apart from John McGrath I'm not sure any I would say are natural wingers as they all seem to want to play in the number 10 or 9 positions, similar with Spinelli I'm not sure if he's a 10 or a 9 as I've seen him drop very far back into midfield when we don't have the ball and im not sure he then has the pace to get forward when we get the ball back

As has been already pointed out, Blake and Jonah didn’t play together yesterday and in the games they have we’ve fared better in terms of results. Sadly from our point of view Jonah looks like he’s going to be out a while.

And wouldn’t we all like a 25+ goals a season striker but a lot easier said than done.

I read the full comments - and I agree with parts of it, especially the Spinelli dropping too deep and lack of width of the wingers. But imho, when I’ve seen Blake/Jonah they do great at winning it back and have shown creativity, so don’t think that’s a fair assessment on the pair from the games they did play together.

The issue for me lies on the outlet they have to pass to when the ball is won back & ready to be recycled, whether that be a lack of width or strikers dropping to receive etc (or both).

We have players who seem capable, it’s just unlocking that link up between them all going forward.

Manager Rory Fallon gave his thoughts on yesterday’s 2-0 loss away to Padiham 💭

“I thought yesterday we actually played some good football, we had good control and the possession stats would back that up”

“What separated the game yesterday was two defensive mis-haps. We failed to deal with their main threat which was a long throw and we didn’t clear the ball then gave away a soft penalty. And the second came from a long ball downfield which we just didn’t deal with”

“It was disappointing as we have been defensively resolute and not gifting goals to the opposition in previous games”

“We need to stick together as a group, there will be some self reflection, we need to not get despondent as the performance level on Monday and again in possession today was good”

“We need to get on a run now and start picking up some results. I’ll be proactive and not let us dwell on that result yesterday. Its a long old season and theres a lot of points available”

“I think moving forward now players need to put more pressure on themselves, especially in an attacking sense”

“There needs to be that pressure to deliver goals, to deliver assists. We need to address the fact we aren’t scoring enough goals and do this very quickly”Copy of Copy of Copy of Copy of Copy of Starting.webp

Another re-arranged game that’s backfired on us, like they did last time we were at this level. Not sure why we needed to play it to be honest, Kiddgrove and Congleton didn’t play. The pitches at the moment are still hard and risky after the summer we’ve had. We lost one left back 2 weeks ago and Jonah now out for a few weeks after bank hol Monday. To put the tin lid on it we lost Clarky after 5 mins yesterday….we need our better players fit for these 6 pointer games like yesterday …..the pitches will soften up by the end of the month hopefully …

I think the logic is we don’t want free Saturdays which can be a momentum killer as we found out far too often in the Midlands League.

Dont think we have a choice its the league who put the games in

There are strict rules around rearranging games and due to cup competitions for us and others, we have needed to utilise midweek dates for some rearrangements, in the coming weeks.

We had the opportunity to bring the Padiham game forward from Feb 27. It was our choice and we took the decision to play it when we thought the pitch/weather would be better and to ensure we wouldn't have two free Saturdays, because Saturday 12th was also vacant (Congleton getting through in the Trophy). I have subsequently rearranged Colls for then.

If you had a crystal ball and you knew some of your best/most experienced players are going to be missing, you'd try and re-organise differently within the rules. Sadly, I'm not 'Mystic Vic' :D Injuries and suspensions - sods law!
