Toddy Barlow was a great supporter of 1874 and was always looking for ways to raise money for the club and I strongly believe his “Money for Goals” scheme was the best of the lot. Last year, as we all remember, was a poor season and the scheme only raised £1,051.50 whereas this year, which has been so memorable, has raised (to date – and assuming all monies are paid in) £2,864.50p! My thanks to those of you happily pay Guy Vicki or me every week without complaining too much, and to those of you who pay at the end of the year, and to all of you for sticking with the scheme.

It will of course continue through the playoffs, which are just the end of the season and it is just a shame that we are unlikely to make the £3,000 mark although it is possible as each league goal is worth £31.50, each clean sheet £21.00, a game with no cards £7, defender’s goals £5 and penalty saves (in normal time) £5. Yesterday we won 2-0, no cards and a defender’s goal so it was worth £96 to the club.

To those of you who are not in the scheme please consider it. It does help the club and it needn’t cost you a fortune. Not everyone pays 50p/goal, about half pay £1 and one pays £2, and on clean sheets one pays 50p, 4 £1, 3 £2, 1 each pay £2.50, £3 and £5. This year we have scored (so far) 19 goals in the cup and 63 in the league, so at 50p would only have cost you £41 over 9 months or slightly over £1 per week. We have had 13 (12+1) clean sheets and at £1 each would have cost you about 35p/week. We have 49 brilliant members but if another 20 joined on goals at 50p we would raise another £820 on this year’s goals. Please think about it and if you can afford it join us for next season.

As Toddy's grandson I would also like to thank everyone who is a part of his money for goals scheme and to Richard, Guy, and Vicki for continuing it, he was always very happy to fundraise as much as possible for the club and this scheme was a particular favourite of his ideas, I myself am not yet supporting this particular scheme but will definitely look at doing it in the coming seasons should it hopefully continue for many years to come, I would urge anyone to take part in this no matter how much you are able to give as it all helps the club moving forward.

Josh, thanks for those thoughts. I did not realise you were Toddy's grandson - what a man he was!

Yesterday I was in Warrington Market speaking to the Nosey Parker sweet stall lady, and Toddy's name came up.
