interesting debate , still think the bulk of all 3 clubs fanbases wouldn’t entertain the idea atm. Too much emotion involved to realise that society grows great when old men plant trees whose shade they know they shall never sit in 😂
A wonderful observation Dennis. And that was the whole point of starting this thread.

What legacy do we, the supporters of the three current teams, want to leave future generations and the town as a whole. Kidderminster, Morecambe, Boston, Barrow, Crawley, Stevenage and others have shown what can happen when there is just one team in the their town (all of which are similar in size to Northwich). But this won’t happen whilst there are 3 clubs fighting for a limited audience and support from local businesses.

Again you talk a great deal of sense Knutsfordian. But you support the bloody Tories! Some contradictions there

I will let you off with the political assassinations lol. The question we have to answer is whether we can create a platform for future generations to see their team(s) succeed and provide the enjoyment we have enjoyed in the past. Some people may be quite happy to see the teams exist as they do now, but I think in our hearts we know that is the path to no where, so an honest and open discussion will do no one any harm and ultimately may benefit football in Mid Cheshire.

Interesting discussion this. It’s worth at least having a debate.

Logically I can see the sense in the clubs coming together and we all want what is best for football in this town and to ensure our long-term prospects. However, in reality I think the idea would most likely never take off due to the history between the clubs and various emotions and hatreds. Not to mention the complications around choosing things such as a name.

Worth discussing though. No harm in that.

Finance is the major sticking point. How would the club be structured? Owned by a group of individuals, shareholders or fan run/financed? At least two business models presently in operation, not sure they could be blended together in any merger without one or more of the parties feeling they’ve lost out on control, financial stake and/or their club ethos/principles.

Yes Tez there will be huge issues and obstacles that would potentially block any discussion towards a possible integration never mind it happening.

But if you never take that first step on the journey……🤫

We are talking heresy now james - take that man out and burn him at the stake - but yes it needs to be at least thought about
Knutsfordian - I’ve made a career out of being unpopular. Don’t forget that I was banned by the Conman for what I (and Edge) made public about him and many Vics fans supported his actions. I was also one of the drug dealers biggest critics. But again others slavishly followed him rather than supporting the stance of the Supporters Trust.

So yes, some ‘74 fans may well level the charge of heresy against me, but frankly I don’t give a fig. What I care about is the long term viability of senior football in the town and imho in its current format it is doomed to mediocrity at best.

Is this really the legacy that we want to leave?

James if you and Knutsfordian are so keen on one club in the town maybe you should get together and do something about it.Talk is cheap and we seem to get plenty of that, lets see some action to see what the fans from the clubs concerned want, and would support it .To get you started my vote would be no.

So Toddy you’d be happy for football in the town to wither on the vine? Because that is exactly what is happening and has been for the last decade or more.

And before you get the wrong end of the stick, if we stay at Barnton playing a similar level than we are at present, then I’ll be happy. But for us to progress further is going to be tough, as much off the field than on it.

All I am saying is given the point that the three clubs find themselves in at the moment, is this not a apposite time to think about the long term of football in the town and maybe create something for future generations - not us decrepit old farts - that is better than the current, clearly broken model?

Hi all, just adding my 2 cents.. of course there should be 1 club in Northwich. One team will go up the non league ladder/f a cup runs etc with better support whilst 3 clubs will languish in the lower levels with one person and his dog watching within the next 20 years (if still existing that is)
My vote is yes.

why do none of the increasing numbers of Wittoners who now post on the 1874 forum expand the discussion regarding a one team in northwich put the proposal on the Witton fans forum and lets see the response. As wittons ground would be the ground used in a combined team .if the major shaeholders at witton and the board are not interested then you might as well forget it if they are positive then push it forward

What an interesting and mature discussion this is. I can’t see Witton ever entertaining the idea of a merger - a total non-starter. As for Vics and 1874, it’s a split of a potentially larger fan base which means in reality neither club will be able to progress as far as they would like to. Both clubs are at risk of the other club having a good season and attracting the floating supporters. 1874 was established at a time when it looked like Vics would disappear with Rushe. That didn’t happen - which left us with this slightly awkward situation. Vics have clearly got lucky in terms of finance (saying no more), but I think it’s inevitable at some point the clubs need to discuss rejoining. It is unsustainable having 5 non-league teams within a 5-mile radius. It might be 5 years, it might be 50, but I think talks will happen. The way 1874 has been run over the past 9 years is a beacon for how a football club should be run and Vics would be very fortunate to be a part of it.

I would have thought that the issue is between 1874 and Witton. 1874 are solvent and have the opportunity to realize community funding and other sources of income because of the legal status of the club. Witton has a ground but no money and both clubs bring something to the table. Vics have a less than opaque status and has neither money nor ground.

i think Witton would entertain the idea they are struggling like most lower level clubs . and like all clubs are not attracting new fans mainly due to SKY tv. they of the three clubs have the biggest financial outlay due to ground costs plus the higher level that they play and the implications that brings. As for Vics you cannot create a town team without involving them. as for saying they have no money or its dodgy money thats is just hearsay Witton chairman is a business man and they always look at the bigger picture so who knows.as as this was first suggested by James if it did happen maybe the stadium could be named THE JAMES WOOD ARENA (or is that a bridge to far ) !!!

The name needs to reflect the history of the possible amalgamated Clubs. Might I suggest the "Buckley, Harris and Wood Stadium". There's no chance of James being banned from the Stadium, unless he is asking awkward/embarrassing questions of the Owner again.
