A LATE goal from Adam Foy secured 1874 Northwich a first competitive win of their history at Daisy Hill on Saturday (August 10).

The midfielder was presented with the simplest of finishes from Lee Hendley’s fine assist with three minutes to spare after Daisy Hill had twice levelled the scores in a see-saw encounter.

The win has seen 1874 move up to 6th position in the league standings against a Daisy Hill side that went into the game with a 100% record and remain in 3rd place.

1874 manager Ian Street made two changes from the team that drew with Irlam in midweek with Adam Leake replacing Matt Conkie in goal and Dave Tickle coming in at left back which meant that Phil Coffin made way for Ryan Stewart who was moved in to a more advanced role down the left hand side.

Daisy Hill, nicknamed the Daisies, started the encounter in the ascendancy on a fine playing surface, and a mistake from Lee Duckworth after three minutes gifted the ball to lively wide man Sakeel Abdullah who threaded a pass through to forward Andrew Buckley who could only hit a low shot straight into 1874 goalkeeper Adam Leake.

At the other end, 1874 had little to show for their efforts in the first half hour with their only chance seeing Tickle shoot high and wide from the edge of the box in meeting Mike Brandon’s cross from the left-hand-side after excellent vision from Stewart gave Brandon the space to cross.

However, despite the lack of goalmouth action for the away side, it was 1874 who took the lead on 31 minutes when Dean McGregor’s cross from the right was rolled home from close range by Brandon.

The goal did not settle 1874 and the Daisies almost equalised three minutes later when striker Buckley expertly controlled a long ball over the top, before darting around Leake who had come out, only to hit a shot from a tight angle into the side-netting.

The last action of a half the Daisies edged.
The Daisies weren't made to wait long for their equaliser, and an equaliser deservedly came six minutes into the second period.

The goal came from a Kiel Brennan corner which saw an unmarked Lee Scannon bury into the bottom corner right hand corner on 51 minutes.

1874 looked to respond and could have retaken the lead on 52 minutes when a menacing Stewart free kick swung into the box from the right-hand side was met by an unmarked Danny Thomas, who controlled the ball but could only muster a weak shot from close range into Daisies goalkeeper Steven Whittle

The second half was proving an end-to-end affair and the Daisies were next to almost go in front in near identical fashion to their first goal on 58 minutes.

The source, another Brennan Corner, was headed towards goal by an unmarked Steven Collier, only for Duckworth to hack a ball off the line that seemed destined for the net.

This warning prompted Street to make two substitutions with an hour gone. Steve Crane was replaced by Paul Lewis and Anthony Marshall made way for Hendley.

The introduction of Hendley changed the game. He made almost an instant impact when his bursting run saw him one-on-one with Whittle, only for him to take one touch too many and allow Collier to get back and tackle.

However, on 83 minutes Hendley was to make up for this in brilliant fashion and allow 1874 to retake the lead when he volleyed home from a tight angle in meeting a low cross.

But 1874’s lead did not last long, three minutes long to be exact.
The Daisies equaliser came when some good work from Abdullah saw him deliver a cross inside the box to Paul Oldham who swept the ball home for 2-2.

If the spectators at the ground thought this was it for the afternoon, they were wrong, when straight from the kick-off 1874 scored what proved to be the decisive winner.

Again, Hendley was involved when another fine run from the right-wing saw him cut inside the box past Collier and produce a teasing low cross which was flicked on by Ryan Mitchell, leaving Foy with a tap-in that he could not miss from close-range.

The goal delighted a sizeable 1874 faithful who had boosted the crowd to 147 in number.
It signalled the end of a topsy-turvy spell which saw three goals in the space of ten minutes.
Next up for 1874 is a home game against Nelson next Saturday, kick-off 3pm.
