Although out new club won’t actually kick a ball in anger until later in the year, tonight 1874 Northwich scored its first victory when it beat off several other teams to lift the Witton Albion Football Quiz Trophy!

The team of Mark and Alan Riding, Chris Borley and James Wood – named the 95 percenters - faced a series of eight rounds of questions over a diverse range of football related topics ranging from football related songs to Mid-Cheshire football.

Trailing by 2 points at the half-way mark, the team went into over-drive early in the second-half by scoring seven out of ten in the specialist round about Witton Albion!

This caused a few red faces from the Albion camp but also some questions from the other members of the 1874 team about the amount of knowledge that one of their party knew about the Wincham Park outfit! Some mutterings about knowing your enemy seemed to satisfy their justifiable concerns....

The round on the team that we used to support produced the perfect ten and despite a rocky last series on general knowledge, the team cruised to victory by a five point margin.

The sweet victory on ‘Hun’ soil being enough, the 1874 side generously donated their winnings back to WAFC on the proviso that they try and provide sterner opposition next time – but then again, we’ve been asking the same question for over a century now!

A fine evening was rounded off by the 1874 team engaging one Mr Brian Pritchard Esq in some banter as well as explaining why, even though he is obsessed with NVFC / 1874, he had not been considered for the post of manager of 1874!

Seriously, it was a great night and thanks to all at Witton - particularly Steve Yoxall and Phil Chadwick - for organising and running such an enjoyable event and to ‘Pritch’ for being such a sport (as always). Hopefully this is something that we at 1874 can replicate in the non-too distant future.
