1874 News Scott McGowan

Money talks.

But he was one of the biggest critics of Greg Hall when he did something very similar when he joined Witton. Hypocritical? I’ll let others decide that.

He could have been a 74 legend but the method of his departure will now always taint his otherwise fabulous record for the club.

I disagree.

Sure, it’s an absolute kick in the teeth, and he is leaving under a cloud. But I wouldn’t say it’s tainted his records.

A fantastic player for our club, brought us fantastic times and fantastic memories.

We’ve all seen the rumoured numbers that Macc are paying out. Add that to the opportunity to play infront of 2/3000 every week is an opportunity I wouldn’t begrudge anyone taking up

You can’t knock him for wanting to play for them. Maybe he was torn about it, maybe he said no and they offered more money.
We need to look forward now, we’ve got a squad that the managers are very loyal to, but probably in their hearts know that a number of them aren’t good enough for the move up. I presume McGowen going frees up some budget - we are going to need to get a striker in, and probably a few others to be competitive. Some tough decisions ahead.

Blimey, 1st day of me holiday and it's all kicking off!
I have to agree with Andy above. Good luck Scott and thanks for the memories. Will be interesting to see who we line up to replace him?

Spot on Kit
Its tough on the lads that got us promoted, but if we wait too long, it might be too late
We need to act now and get our network of contacts onto this, we must have connections at higher levels that we can call on ?
Two or Three quality lads, will make a big difference, we can't just recycle the same small pool of players and ex squad players

I think whether you can get a replacement for SM of a similar ilk will be the acid test for 74 in the league they are now in. Teams both above (and below as Macc have shown) have money to throw at getting the right players on board and any mistakes made are hugely costly. There are teams in the Prem league with a budget 5 or 6 times that of the Albion and I am sure your league will be the same, so it's where it starts getting tough.

Considering you're not allowed to talk to the club for 7 days after the approach he's done well to spend a fortnight looking around.

I don’t blame him for taking up Maccs offer. It is the way that he and they have gone about things that is the problem.

As I said he was one of the biggest critics of Greg Hall when he left us in the lurch with very little time to find a replacement before the start of the season but now he’s done a very similar thing just weeks into the season.

It was clearly the case that Macc were after him pre season yet he opted to sign for us and gave a long interview to Andy Simpson that was splashed over 2 pages in the NLP about how pleased he was to do so. That, to me, is hypocritical and that is why the manner of his departure will taint his otherwise fabulous record for 74.

Interesting reading Goodies update in the weekly newsletter..... it's obvious that he feels let down with Scottie and how he has conducted himself with the move....

Anyway, he's no longer an 1874 player, so thank him for his on the field efforts.... but we move on... the club is bigger than just one player!
