These bunch of charlatans, spivs and con-men could not be further from the Tory party of the 80’s that I (unfortunately) grew up under

But are they really James??? You may not like what they do, how they do it or the consequences of doing it but are they really as ill judged as some would make out? They have implemented a Brexit deal that you absolutely hate and are managing through a pandemic that has destroyed lives and livelihoods, but have they done it to deliberately make life the poorer for anyone? I don't think so.

The bigger problem and the one you keep avoiding is the Labour party itself. There isn't even a glimmer of hope on the horizon. No policies, no purpose, no direction, no aspiration, no inspiration, no leadership. It's a void. A black hole of complete and utter nothingness. Why does that matter more? Well because just say you are right. I don't think so, but say you are. What are we left with? Something that is absolutely too awful to contemplate, so the charlatans make good again. Labour are fixated with trying to win meaningless battles when the its the war to be electable they must really win. When they realise that 's the problem they just might start out on the path to government by becoming a decent opposition.

Are you seriously saying that the mess the Labour Party is in is a bigger problem than the results of the incompetence and mistakes by the government in handling the pandemic?

I want a government that is competent, trustworthy, acknowledges and atones for mistakes and is honest with the people. It is of course an advantage to have an opposition that is effective and competent in holding that government to account and challenging assumptions, but on balance to me the former is more important at the moment.

I don't think that the government is that incompetent. Yes mistakes have been made, but that was inevitable given the nature of the pandemic and given the recent election results most of the electorate concur with that view

But just say you and James are correct - what alternative do you have ? The opposition is demonstrably worse ! There is no realistic proposition of Labour forming a better government. So you may dislike this government, but at the very least it is the least worst option !!

It appears that things got a little bit out of hand at Bozo’s & Carrie’s post wedding drinks party....

Not incompetent? Well explain this one away.

“Ministers knew about the Indian variant on April 1, didn’t tell the public until April 15 and didn’t put India on the red list till April 23. Now the infection numbers are going up again fast. Yet again the government has delayed with reckless consequences.”

so how were we going to keep the thousands of UK citizens of Indian descent and visiting family in India out of the UK indefinitely?

Edge. He’s not ‘literally’ the Health Secretary. He is the effin Health Secretary! If he hasn’t got a scooby’s about the figures, then who the hell does?
Halfcock’s lies to the HoC laid bare for all to hear on this mornings edition of the ever excellent R4 programme ‘More or Less’.

Yet another example of this government’s commitment to the levelling up agenda and making the education of our children an absolute priority.

Fifty effin quid for each pupil ?. But they can find £Bs for nuclear warheads we don’t need, £200M for a friggin boat no-one needs or wants, £Bs on a shit T&T system, £250k on a media room no one uses.

But spend money on investing in the future of our children? Rhetoric as ever.

We currently spend nigh on £ 100 billion pounds per year on primary and secondary school education and we are now saying most of that was wasted over the past 12 months? None of it was saved to provide for return to normal levels once the pandemic was over? The whole education industry marched on regardless. I have not heard of a single initiative coming from the education sector and yet the answer is throw more money at it - another £15billion to be precise.

In any other industry, the companies would be planning their resources and making adjustments to live within their means - but none of this applies to public services. The answer is always more money, then more again. The shocking news is not that the government is starting to hold the line on public spending going forwards, but that yet again a completely inefficient public service fails to make any provisions for its future.

And just listening to LBC it seems that the students who need to attend these extra lessons don't want them and don't attend anyway !! so it seems like its throwing good money after bad !

Direct quote from the Randstad website

“Randstad is the global leader in the HR services industry.”

No mention whatsoever anywhere on the site of experience in supplying tutoring to children. So HTF have they been awarded the contact to provide this service to our schools?

Another T&T fiasco in the making?

All that I know is that Boris and his pals aren’t too keen on feeding hungry kids and now they don’t seem to be to keen on educating them either.

Thatcher would have been proud of him!

Imagine thinking that £50 per student to catch up is acceptable when it’s less than MP’s are allowed to claim for their lunch.

Clearly Tory MPs value their stomachs over those of the most socially vulnerable children??

sorry - a London Maths teacher (I think it was) who phoned up to say that the students who were being targeted (presumably because they are behind the curve) aren't bothered, so don't attend the catch up sessions. The ones that do are those that like the subject and are OK anyway.

And you telling me that the (nigh on) £100 billion spent on education as/is all fully and correctly utilised? That every teacher was fully engaged during the pandemic and that there couldn't have been some savings made to help boost the education of students when it was all over?

Sounds like its all money down the collective drain to me.

Aside from this latest bump in the educational journey of our young people, does anyone really know how educational attainment is measured and any improvement (measured in real terms) of all the funding provided to education over (say) the past 20 years? Exam results are not a good measure as the pass rates are inevitably modified and manipulated.

Are you saying that all the money that is spent by the private sector is fully and correctly utilised??

Greensill. Arcadia. Bearings Bank. Northern Rock. Thomas Cook. Flybe. Carrillion. Several train franchises (many owned by foreign governments!?)

Absolutely not - but private companies lose their investors money - vast amounts of it !! That's not coming out of the public purse.

Moist private companies will survive this pandemic by managing their finances, maybe by asking investors and banks for more money, but by and large they will have to show that they can pay it back.

Public services must all have a Viv Nicholson at the helm - its spend spend spend and just get the poor sodding taxpayer to foot the bill when it goes wrong.

So who exactly bailed out the banks then? ?

Assuming it's related to a change in the code then the post implementation testing team should be flogged.
Or the server monitoring team.
Dido maybe?

But as it's only £37bn we shouldn't really expect the world class test, track & trace system to work & reduce the spread of the Indian variant I suppose.
There's been lots of numbers bandied around about the costs of test and trace here, but interesting to note this excerpt from Der Spiegel about the costs in Germany

According to a report, several hundred million euros in connection with corona rapid tests have been billed in Germany from the beginning of the year to mid-May. Around 225 million euros were spent on rapid antigen tests, and around 338 million euros on taking nasal or throat swabs, which are necessary for rapid and PCR tests, as the newspapers of the editorial network Germany reported on Friday . They relied on answers from the Federal Ministry of Health to questions from the SPD parliamentary group.

Given the amount of testing done in the UK (I think) has exceeded just about everywhere else in Europe, I would expect costs in the UK to exceed what has been reported here .............
