I see that the Guardian were asking fans of all the local clubs to submit their suggestions for their clubs’ best ever starting XI. So given we’ve got little else to talk about on the footy front at present, I thought that it would be a good idea to start the debate here on the forum, going position by position.

So, unsurprisingly I’m suggesting that we start off with the No 1 shirt.

IMHO there are only 3 players we can consider- Matt Connie, Greg Hall and big Tony. So it would be interesting to hear from all you 74 fans out there as to who of this trio should make the all-time XI, why, and what sets them apart from the other two

We have been blessed with some great goalkeepers over our time; but for me it has to be Greg... mad as a box of frogs, but an awesome keeper; great handling, commanded his box and a great shotstopper

For the biggest of games!
Hall, Connor, Mark Jones, Lee Jackson, Russell, Foy, Parker, Aaron Smith, Cain, Scotty, Brandon.

Oh that's difficult, on another day Beadle, Taylor K, Chappie, Koral at full back could all be in!

Conkie! Damned predictive text! ?

I did say that we were going to go position by position Alan!!

What is the first rule of an exam?

Read the bloody exam question correctly! ??

Thanks for reading the exam question correctly Simon! Unlike others that I could mention......?

I think Simon has summed up Greg well. On field I think i would go for him but based on stories I have heard of his disruptive off field activities I would not go for him but go for Conkie who still is sometimes at games.

Can't vote for a player who owes the Club money for his appearance at the Club's Golf Day a year or two ago and then soon announced his departure for Witton. Good riddance !

Based on football only I'd say Greg for his keeping & distribution.

Agree, for football only its Greg but for all round contribution to the club its Conkie. Josh Samburg as reserve on the bench!

Tough one this as I'd personally go for Tony all day in terms of shot stopping but I'd go for Greg in handling of the ball ?

Overall I think Tony just edges it for me as I think he's a bigger and more calming presence behind the back 4 as both Greg and Matt Conkie used to be under the impression that they were Messi or Ronaldo far too much of the time when they would try to take the opposition players on half a dozen times instead of just clearing the ball ??

With you on this one Josh. Tony may be less flamboyant than either Conks or Greg were, but IMHO that is a good trait for a keeper!

What tips it to Tony for me is that he came in at a tough time but helped to provide stablity to the defence. I reckon that it was his arrival that was the catalyst for the Macron cup win and the successful 19/20 season

Not sure I agree James. I think Tony has looked circumspect at times this season as has the defence so perhaps Tony's good form before was down to the stability of Mark and Lee at the centre of the back.

I don’t think there is much to choose between the three of them, all excellent at our level, but I have to say I did enjoy watching Matt Conkie, local chap, and a bit unpredictable.

That's down to not having the settled back four that we had when he first joined us, in fairness any keeper would have struggled playing behind a makeshift back four that we've had since the start of this season

Matt obviously picked up your bad habits Mr W !!!!!!!!!

thanks for starting this James - it certainly won’t be an easy task! That said here goes: we were lucky to have had three excellent keepers and for me Connie just shades it.

I’ve only seen one game ‘this season’ but from what I hear the back line as a whole has been somewhat disjointed. Indeed, I don’t think that it would be unfair to make judgements on the team as a whole, any part or individuals given the fractured, stop-start nature of the 20/21 season.

Sorry, meant to say fair, not unfair. ?
